Join the literacy movement! Grow and learn in service!
Become a Literacy Leader this year!
Are you or someone you know looking to make a difference in your community while gaining meaningful work experience? Applications are now open for an exciting new opportunity with Literacy Minnesota’s yearlong Literacy Leadership Program! Our newly launched Digital Literacy track marks the first time our organization has gone national with AmeriCorps VISTA programming.
Literacy Leaders serve behind the scenes to create, enhance or expand digital equity and literacy programs for individuals experiencing poverty. Digital equity is a fundamental right, allowing people to participate in civic life and fully access education, employment and healthcare.
As a member on the Digital Literacy track, you’ll focus on initiatives to help schools, nonprofits, public agencies or Tribal Nations across the country improve their ability to provide high-quality literacy services that empower individuals and families to move out of poverty. At the same time, you’ll have an opportunity to build leadership skills and networks, explore career paths, pay for college and become a lifelong advocate for the communities you live and serve in.
You’ll be part of a national cohort of about 26 AmeriCorps VISTA members with Literacy Minnesota’s Literacy Leadership program, with opportunities to network, collaborate, learn and serve together.
There are multiple positions available in multiple locations, including: Washington, DC; Chicago, IL; Detroit, MI; St Paul, MN; Trenton, NJ; Buffalo, NY; New York City, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Houston, TX; Glenwood City, WI. Please check our website for specific projects (https://www.literacymn.org/literacyleaderpositions).
Literacy Leaders serve full-time for one calendar year starting in January of 2022. With prior approval from Literacy Minnesota and their site supervisor, they may hold additional part-time jobs or take courses during the term of service.

- At least 18 years of age at the time of placement.

*Some non-US citizens may serve but are not eligible to receive an Education Award (e.g., individuals with DACA status). Please inquire for more details.
In addition to the Literacy Leadership positions, Literacy Minnesota has two special leadership positions – VISTA Leaders – that work side-by-side with the National Service staff to ensure the program runs successfully. VISTA Leaders’ primary role is to provide peer support, resources and training for our cohort of Literacy Leaders and Summer Reads Mentors (who serve for 8 weeks in the summer). They also play an important role in the program evaluation process by supporting members in the collection of data. VISTA Leaders serve out of the Literacy Minnesota main office in Saint Paul. VISTA Leaders must have successfully served previously with AmeriCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps State/National (1700 hours), AmeriCorps NCCC or Peace Corps.
Benefits: bi-weekly living allowance (based on the cost of living and poverty level of the county your host site is located); $6,345 Education Award or $1,800 cash stipend at the end of service; healthcare allowance; housing assistance; service-related travel reimbursement; student loan forbearance; relocation allowance (if moving 50+ miles for service); food support; childcare assistance (if eligible); training. Current public benefit assistance is not affected by AmeriCorps service but may be affected if applied for after service begins.
