Gallery Attendants at the Center of Southwest Studies provide an invaluable service to Fort Lewis College and the public by creating a welcoming and informative environment for all visitors while overseeing the safety of exhibited collections. Gallery Attendants are paid ($13/hour), receive ongoing yearlong training, and gain experience toward potential museum and gallery careers as well as sharpen broader community engagement and customer service skills.
Gallery Attendants work 2-3 shifts/ 8-12 hours per week during the galleries’ fall and spring semester, and are supervised by the Center of Southwest Studies’ Curator of Collections.
Gallery Attendants, together with other museum staff:
- make sure the collections on exhibit are kept safe
- help visitors have safe, enjoyable museum visits
- prepare the facilities for visitors, usually by setting up and breaking down furniture
- help keep the museum clean
Collections Safety: Gallery Attendants work primarily in the galleries where the collections are exhibited. Gallery Attendants are trained on how to keep the collections safe from damage and on how to enforce gallery rules regarding touching objects, photography, and more.
Visitors: Gallery Attendants are the “front line” in meeting visitors. Gallery Attendants interact with visitors, answer questions, and otherwise help visitors have enjoyable museum visits.
Facilities and Cleanliness: Gallery Attendants perform “opening” and “closing” procedures to makes sure the art is safe, the facilities are fully prepared, and that the museum and grounds are clean. Gallery Attendants move chairs, tables, other to help prepare the museum for visitor activities.
Gallery Attendants will also assist with some other museum business, including but not limited to: preparing the galleries (moving collections, installing exhibits, and more); occasionally working some off-site events; assisting with education programs; other museum business as needed.
Successful candidates for the Gallery Attendant position are responsible, reliable, and willing to continually learn throughout the year. Students with an interest in museum work and community engagement are strongly encouraged to apply regardless of major.
